8 Marketing PillarsThis blog post covers the 8 marketing pillars that every business needs to be built on in 2015 and beyond.  In particular, how to market a retail, manufacturing, professional services or online business.

Firstly, what is marketing?  There is a bit of confusion as to the difference between marketing and advertising so i thought i’d quickly cover it.

I’ll go with what it says in the dictionary:

“Marketing.  The action, or business, of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.”  (Oxford English Dictionary online.)

So, advertising is a part of marketing but not the whole picture.

One thing about being successful in business is realising that you need to find an uncapitalised niche (or a niche that you can capitalise), and then leverage other people’s resources (time or expertise) to sell what it is that you have to sell.

I had 5 months to get this project finished at University.  It’s not like I picked the wrong topic to research either.  But here I was, sitting playing the playstation.

My internal dialogue went something like this:

“It’s fine, i’ve still got 4 and a half months yet, no problem.  Plus I need to vacuum the house and go shopping.”

Then it was 4 months, then 3 and a half and finally, at 3 months, I decided to start!

I was supposed to be writing my final dissertation for my Masters degree.

I decided to sonify the sub-atomic particle collisions that were going on at CERN in Switzerland.  Quite a big undertaking really that I should have started straight away!

Considering it took a team of researchers and scientists a couple of years and a bigger budget than mine to do the same thing for the Higgs Boson, or “God Particle”, i should have thought it through a bit more.

But, here I was with 3 months to go procrastinating by tidying up and going to Tesco.

Ever done something similar?

As I write this, we're getting through the first month of 2015 and a lot of people have given up on their resolutions already with 60% giving up by the middle of the year.

The average person makes the same resolution ten times in a row without success.

Here's some scary stats: 95% of people who lose weight on a diet plan will regain the weight they lost and in some cases, gain even more weight than they had originally!

1 of 7 heart attack patients make any enduring changes around eating or exercise.

70% of organisational change initiatives ultimately fail.

Why is that?

Well, it’s because most people have never been taught how to write effective goals. [click to continue…]

Exactly, why blog?  Why put loads of time and effort into blogging and not see results straight away?

Missing the point dude!

That's my answer anyway.

Why blog for business?

Blogging is useful for loads of different thing regarding business but it can also be useful for loads of other stuff like a diary of your travels, a blog of your kids growing up (for your family that's not on Facebook) to see, your child's homework, fundraising activities, sports teams or recipes you want to share.

We're talking about making money with your blog though right?
